Chhatrapati Shivaji Jayanti is a
significant celebration observed throughout India, particularly in Maharashtra,
to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, one of the
greatest warriors and rulers in Indian history. The year 2025 will mark yet
another magnificent celebration of his legacy, bravery, and visionary
leadership. This blog delves into the significance of Shivaji Jayanti, his
contributions, and how the day is honoured.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born on February 19, 1630,
at the Shivneri Fort near Pune, Maharashtra. Shivaji Jayanti, his birth
anniversary, is observed yearly and will happen on Wednesday, February 19,
2025.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a prominent freedom warrior, founded the event in the late
nineteenth century to keep Indian patriotism alive during British rule. Today,
the day commemorates Shivaji's contributions to the Maratha Empire and India's
rich history.
The founder of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was noted for
his remarkable military skills, administrative reforms, and support of Swarajya
(self-rule). Some major highlights of his life are:
• Shivaji Maharaj used guerrilla warfare to overcome greater Mughal and Adil
Shahi forces, demonstrating his military genius.
• He established a formidable navy to defend the Konkan coastline against
foreign incursions.
• Fort Strategy: Captured and built forts like Raigad, Pratapgad, and Sindhudurg
to aid Maratha expansion.
• Shivaji, a devout Hindu, showed religious tolerance by appointing Muslims to
his army and administration.
• Effective Administration: He implemented tax reforms, established a
disciplined army, and ensured fair governance for the people.
Mumbai Airport Named After Shivaji Maharaj:
One of the most significant accolades given upon Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is
the naming of Mumbai's international airport after him. Originally known as
Sahar International Airport, it was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji International
Airport in 1996. Later, in 2018, the airport was officially renamed Chhatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to better reflect his title and legacy.
This designation honours his significant contribution to Indian history and his
long-lasting influence on the people of Maharashtra. Mumbai, as India's
financial hub, welcomes millions of visitors, and the airport named after
Shivaji Maharaj serves as a daily reminder of his tremendous achievements.
Even 395 years later, Shivaji Maharaj's vision and principles continue to
inspire generations. His leadership traits, patriotism, and administrative
abilities serve as models for modern governance, defense methods, and
self-reliance.
